Blending as a Leader: A Lesson from the Brady Bunch

Do you recognize the familiar faces in this photo? If you said Carol and Mike Brady, you’re correct! And if you thought, Wait… is that Heather Neely with really big hair?—you’d also be right.

Let me explain.

When I graduated from UCSB in 1990, finding a job was tough. The economy was struggling, and as a new graduate, I kept hearing the same frustrating feedback: “You’re too young. You need more experience.” But how do you gain experience when no one gives you a chance?

Rather than dwell on the paradox, I got creative. I took on multiple “odd jobs” to build that elusive experience—including working as a TV and movie extra.

Being an extra is all about blending in—seamlessly integrating into the background while supporting the scene. Your role isn’t to stand out, but to enhance the moment, ensuring the main actors shine.

That’s how I found myself on the set of a Brady Bunch reunion special. Growing up watching the show, spending two days working alongside the cast was surreal—and a lot of fun!

But beyond the nostalgia, I walked away with an unexpected leadership lesson: Blending as a leader is a skill. It’s about integrating with others while still providing guidance and influence. It means adapting to different situations without overpowering, leading in a way that fosters trust, collaboration, and connection.

Over time, I’ve come to realize that the best leaders don’t always need to be the loudest in the room—they need to be the ones who bring people together.
So, that’s my story!
