July is Disability Pride Month—a time to honor the strength and achievements of individuals with disabilities. As an amputee and member of Team USA for the Amputee Women’s World Cup, I know the importance of creating inclusive spaces.
In leadership, inclusivity isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a necessity. Leaders who prioritize inclusivity foster environments where diverse perspectives lead to richer discussions, innovative solutions, and stronger teams. One approach to this is the Ask The Person (ATP) method, highlighted in Randy Lewis’s TEDx talk. ATP encourages direct, respectful communication with individuals about their needs and how they can best perform their jobs.
Here are a few ways to champion inclusivity in leadership:
1. Listen and Learn: Value the input of team members with disabilities by asking about their needs directly rather than assuming. Curiosity combined with compassion goes a long way.
2. Create Accessible Environments: Accessibility includes digital access, accommodations, and a culture where everyone feels comfortable expressing their needs.
3. Promote Representation: Include individuals with disabilities in leadership roles to break stereotypes and inspire others. Challenge your own expectations to promote great results, not just conformity.
4. Advocate for Change: Use your platform to support policies and practices that enhance inclusivity, like better accessibility standards and disability rights legislation.
5. Celebrate Diversity: Recognize and celebrate the unique contributions of individuals with disabilities. Their experiences drive innovation and organizational success.
As we celebrate Disability Pride Month and beyond, let’s commit to fostering inclusivity in all aspects of our lives. The best way to understand someone’s needs? Just ask the person.
