Have you noticed… many mediocre “teams” aren’t actually teams.
They’re groups of task-doers.
We tend to believe better performance comes from working as a group. Yet, a group of great people (no matter how awesome they may be) doesn’t automatically mean achieving great results.
This is because when people work in a group, they are focused on their performance, tasks, and personal ability to get results.
But, when we work in a team, our focus changes. It’s the team’s performance that counts.
When people work in groups, not teams, you often see
❌ more miscues and miscoordination,
❌ conflict avoidance and self-promoting behavior,
❌ finger-pointing,
❌ and – unsurprisingly – underperformance.
While teams tend to
✔️ accomplish and innovate more,
✔️ understand their customers better,
✔️ actively engage diverse perspectives and skills,
✔️ learn faster,
✔️ provide more professional development and satisfaction,
✔️ and adapt faster to changing circumstances.
Leaders, have you created a group or a team?
