There are so many extraordinary things about being human.
One of them is this, we are inherently generative.
Biologically, this is happening all the time.
Our cells regenerate.
Our bodies repair.
Our blood renews.
It is a quiet, ongoing miracle happening whether we notice it or not. And this same generative capacity shows up in another powerful way.
Through language.
Moment to moment, we are generating our lives in and through conversations.
We use language to:
- bring forward what we care about
- connect with others
- influence and inspire
- coordinate action
- express gratitude
- express dissatisfaction and make requests for something better
Language is not just descriptive. It is creative. It shapes what becomes possible.
And here is the most important part….
If we are not aware of how we are using language, we may not be generating what we actually want. Even more, we may not see the missing conversations that are quietly shaping our results, our relationships, and our experience of life.
To be generative is to create. To create is to engage in the conversations that matter.
One of my favorite parts of coaching individuals and teams is helping them see:
where a new conversation could open something up
where a different request could change everything
where naming what is true could create freedom, clarity, and movement
This is available to all of us.
I am starting a weekly series where I will share some of the most common missing conversations I see in people’s lives professionally and personally. And how to begin stepping into them.
Because to be human is to generate our lives through language.
And I believe in what is possible for all or us!
Is there a conversation you need to have to move something forward?
What has stopped you?
Maybe busyness.
Maybe uncertainty about how to do it skillfully.
Maybe you simply had not seen it as a missing conversation until now.
Be curious and compassionate with yourself as you notice where conversations are waiting to happen in your life and what new future they might generate.
Onward you go.
