Wherever You Go, There You Are: Leading with Your Whole Self

We like to think we can compartmentalize—that we can leave stress at the door when we start work, or that a tough day in the office won’t follow us home. But the truth is, we bring all of ourselves wherever we go.

A few years ago, after choosing to amputate my leg to pursue a more active life, I tried to separate the emotional and physical toll of recovery from my professional world. I told myself I could “power through” client sessions and team strategy calls like nothing had changed.

But the grief, exhaustion, and uncertainty came with me.

Everything shifted when I stopped pretending I was fine and started showing up as my whole self. That meant honoring my needs, building grounding rituals, and being honest about my capacity. Ironically, the more I integrated, the stronger and more effective I became—both as a coach and as a leader.

We often buy into the myth that we have to split ourselves in two: life-you and work-you. But that split is an illusion.
Stress at home affects how we lead.
Work tension spills into our relationships.
And trying to keep it all separate is exhausting.

When we tend to the whole person, we unlock:

Resilience rooted in renewal, not burnout
Clarity aligned with values
Authenticity that builds trust
Sustainable performance grounded in presence
